Race day preparation

Want to know how to make sure you catch people's eyes, and give yourself a fighting chance of winning a Best New Blood prize? Here are some training tips:

  • Quality not quantity

Show your one or two best pieces of work, not everything you've ever done.

  • Keep it simple and clean

Be clear what each project is, and let the work speak for itself. Make sure your work is labelled clearly with your name and contact details.

  • Spelling matters

Misspelt words mean you don't care.

  • Get out your comfort zone

Don't just show the work that appeals to you, as that's not going to appeal to everyone. Show how you convey passion about the things that you aren't as interested in.

  • Be interactive

If you have digital skills, show them. How about a DVD of your work that people can take with them?

  • Show your working

As well as having your portfolios handy, make sure your sketchbooks and supporting materials are close by.

  • Card up

Have lots and lots and lots and lots of business cards with your mobile numbers and websites on them.

  • Always be on

Make sure there's always someone manning your stand, and able to answer any questions. It could land you a job.
